Hi, I am a member of a recently formed ACW cavalry group in the UK. See www.cavalry.org.uk. I have been a reenactor since 1973, mostly English Civil War, ACW only since the end of '08. Apart from still learning and have a lot of fun I want to enquire about the possibility of attending Gettysberg in 2013. For a start would any unit be prepared to play host and can horses be hired for the event? If the answer to either of these is no, then it's obviously not worth taking it any further.

David, To generalize, units are usually willing to have new guys fall in with them, but it often depends on the unit. Its best to cultivate a relationship before the actual event and even more so since you are on the other side of the pond. The answer to your second question is a definate yes, but for the number are limited so it is a necessity to plan ahead. If you have any other questions about mounted CW reenacting, please dont be afraid to ask. Regards, Dave Myrick
Dear Dave, Many thanks for that, pretty much what I was hoping for. Obviously the thinking about Gettysberg in 2013 is that it will the big one and an experience not likely to be available again for a while. I have no idea how many of my colleagues might come, but the more I think about it the more it appeals to me. I also realise that there is an awful lot to organise/agree/sort out and that starting now, three years ahead, is not so daft.
