I am a weaver, spinner, and soap maker. I used to do Civil War re-enacting but stopped when I bought a couple horses. There just wasn't enough time to do both. Now that I'm getting ready to retire I'll have time for re-enacting again. I'd like to make some authentic civil war era soaps. One soap I'd like to make is saddle soap. I've read the articles by Mr. Jarnagin. Can someone point me towards some more information on Civil War era soap, specifically saddle soap? I've heard beef tallow based soap, and cod liver oil based soap were preferred. Something more specific than that would be much appreciated. Thanks.
