I was just given a very nice western saddle, complete with reins, halter and bridle, and surcingle that I can't use. It's not brand new- it sat forgotten on a tack shelf for probably twenty years, and I'm in the process of cleaning it right now, but aside from a spot on the pommel horn that was chewed by something it's almost like new. A little saddle soap and some restorer and it's looking very nice. It's a caramel-brown with very nice tooling on most surfaces of it, including the seat and skirts. If I rode western or did the single action/cowboy shooting scene, I'd love to have it, but I only do military impressions- no cowboy saddles required.
I'm willing to trade it for just about anything useful- I'm in need of either a Grimsley or a McClellan (I do MexWar and Civil War impressions), but in all honesty I doubt it's worth enough for a straight up trade for a Grimsley, unless someone has an old one they aren't using. I'd also trade for a carbine if someone has one they want to get rid of. Considering it basically comes with everything but the saddle bags, any other tack to go with a saddle would be expected. I'm not looking for brand new- as long as you've got something serviceable that works for my impression, I'll check it out.
If anyone is interested I can supply photos, I just haven't had the chance to take them yet- I'm getting married this week, and we've been extremely busy. Plus I want to wait until I'm done cleaning it to get the pics.
On reconsideration, looking at the prices of the saddles I'm looking for, just a straight up trade for a McClellan (incl. Surcingle and reins/halter combo) or a Grimsley by itself (nothing included, just saddle) will do if anyone has one to dump. I forgot just how much Grimsleys go for. McClellans are a lot cheaper, closer to the value of the saddle I've got for the trade.
Even something needing a bit of work will do, I have no problem with taking on a winter project.
