I'm with a group interested in forming a mounted Union cavalry unit in Southwest Ohio - Dayton Area. We plan to have 4-8 mounted troopers with gear by this fall. We would like to talk with/be mentored by an existing unit, will even consider formally joining an existing unit if we can get some help with participation in local parades and events in our area, possibly a fall encampment in our area.
Please let me know who's active in the hobby, thanks!

Welcome aboard, Cavalry is a wild and wonderful hobby. Congrats to you for leaping in with both feet. It'll be a big job to get a unit together out of the blue.
That said, I guess my first question to you would be what type of unit are you looking to form? Mainstream, progressive, parade, something else?
The answer to that question will then dictate the advice I give you. I ride at the helm of the 1st Maine Cavalry. We are based out of the mid Atlantic, but have members from VA to ME. We aren't in Ohio, but I know plenty of folks from Ohio come to events in the MD/PA/VA area, so if you want to go on the progressive track, and you're willing to hit some events in the east, I'd be happy to help your crew.
If your more of a mainstream mindset, I highly recommend the 6th Ohio cavalry. I think they are based more in SE Ohio, but they are decent guys, and will take good care of you in the mainstream world.
