Federal cavalry regiments broken into squadrons and further into companies and assigned to infantry organizations, brigades and divisions. From these regular line cavalry units, men were assigned to courier duty. They moved with, camped with and when need be fought with, their parent companies. There was no special designation, uniform or insignia that denoted someone as a courier.
CS cav organizations were used a bit differently and admittedly, I have no good understanding of how couriers were assigned there.
